Are words, photographs and speeches sufficient means for describing and communicating a complex, harsh, unmanageable reality? These unsolved questions pursue Cassandra during her trip through the impenetrable Chaco as chronicler of a means of communication, her first job after graduating from literature school. The unknown reality of native peoples who live in the Chaco communities, their beautiful and uncomprehensive languages and their dilemmas facing an economy which excludes them, are part of a trip in which Cassandra finds an inhabitable world within her status as foreigner. Her visions start merging with the cosmovision of ancient inhabitants until she becomes part of the enigma herself.
A group of archaeologists open a tomb that awakens horrible monsters, while journeyman Yusuke Godai is compelled to access a strange belt from the tomb to fight back against them. Also, a drunkard witnesses a murder by an unidentified lifeform near a church. Meanwhile, Yusuke is bothered by the idea of fighting and is unsure if it was right until he saw the daughter of one of the slain archeologists crying, making his reason to fight "to protect the smiles of people". Após causar uma grande quantidade de caos, um garçom (Charles Chaplin) decide pegar seus patins e vai até o rinque de patinação de gelo da cidade. Depois do verdadeiro balé no gelo, o garçom é convidado para uma grande festa na casa de Edna (Edna Purviance) e lá, ele causa mais confusões ainda.
O assistente de uma casa de penhores lida com seu chefe mal-humorado, seu colega irritante e alguns clientes excêntricos enquanto flerta com a filha da casa de penhores, até que um vigarista pérfido e com más intenções chega à casa de penhores.
Carlitos é um aprendiz de alfaiate que, por acidente, queima a calça do conde e por isso é demitido. O alfaiate encontra um bilhete dizendo que o conde não pode ir na festa, então ele se veste como um conde e vai na festa. Carlitos vai até a casa onde a festa acontece e encontra o alfaiate. Os dois tentam conquistar a empregada mais bonita da casa, mas não têm sucesso. Carlitos é atraído por uma jovem cigana e o alfaiate tem que distrair os outros pretendentes. O verdadeiro conde aparece na festa, vê os dois impostores, chama a polícia, e eles têm que fugir.
