Sinopse: Luzia chega ao Rio com a expectativa de vida nova. Na grande cidade ela também encontra Jasão, seu noivo, ex-vaqueiro, que deixara o Nordeste. Mas esse finge que não a reconhece e Luzia, sozinha, se vê obrigada a aceitar a 'proteção' de Calunga, um desocupado, para quem a vida é uma fascinante aventura sem caráter ou remorso. Esse, depois de usá-la, a deixa nas mãos de Inácio a quem pede que a abrigue temporariamente. Mas o reencontro com Jasão despertará novamente o amor.
