Michael Lewis é um jovem arquiteto de Nova York que tem uma série de sonhos e visões que o assustam. Seu temor aumenta quando atropela uma velha senhora que, em seus braços antes de morrer, murmura com alívio o seu nome. Logo após, surpreendentemente a senhora o visita em sua forma espiritual. Enquanto viva ela tinha a habilidade de ver os espíritos e sua missão era ajudá-los em suas pendências na passagem deste mundo para o mundo espiritual. O seu alívio reside no fato de estar passando essa tarefa a Michael. Todavia o seu legado traz um número de espíritos insatisfeitos com Michael e ao mesmo tempo coincide com a presença de um "serial killer" e suas vítimas. Com a ajuda de Isabel um espírito na forma de uma bela jovem e uma menininha ele tenta desenvolver suas habilidades para ajudar os demais e apanhar o serial killer.
