Boris Plots (Alfred Molina) é o dono de uma empresa que organiza funerais que vive na pequena cidade de Welsh, na Inglaterra. Boris é completamente apaixonado por Betty Rhys-Jones (Brenda Blethyn) desde quando era adolescente, e agora sabe que seu amor é correspondido. Porém há um problema: Betty é casada, com Hugh (Robert Pugh), e não quer quebrar os votos que fez no matrimônio de acompanhar o marido até que a morte os separe. Para driblar a situação, Boris oferece uma saída incomum: realizar um funeral de Betty, enganando a todos na cidade e possibilidade que ela fuja com ele. O plano segue em frente, mas eles não contavam com a interferência de Frank Featherbed (Christopher Walken), um empresário americano que também trabalha no ramo de funerais, mas que acredita que eles devem ser mais alegres e descontraídos.
