Sinopse: Um monge de nove anos, Do-nyum, viveu a maior parte de sua vida solitária em um tranquilo mosteiro nas montanhas, sob a tutela de seu mestre idoso. Embora submetido a um regime rigoroso de ensinamentos budistas, meditação e tarefas domésticas, a criança não consegue deixar de pensar em sua mãe, de quem não se lembra, mas sente muita falta e espera reencontrar um dia. Ele também deseja ser como as outras crianças que moram perto, brincar e frequentar a escola. O outro companheiro de Do-nyum é um monge mais velho chamado Jung-sim, que também luta para permanecer no caminho da iluminação. O zelador do templo continua garantindo a Do-Nyum que sua mãe voltará algum dia. Mas Do-nyum, cansado de esperar por uma mãe que pode nunca mais voltar, concorda em ser adotado pela benfeitora do mosteiro, uma viúva rica que visita o templo todos os anos para lamentar a morte do filho.
