Início do século XX. Gustav von Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde) é um compositor austríaco que vai para Veneza buscando repouso, após um período de estresse artístico e pessoal. Porém ele não encontra a paz desejada, pois logo desenvolve uma paixão por um jovem, Tadzio (Björn Andrésen), que está em férias com sua família. Tadzio incorpora o ideal de beleza que von Aschenbach sempre imaginou e pensa em ir embora antes de cometer um ato impensado, mas sua bagagem foi para outra cidade, obrigando-o a permanecer ali. Além disto a cólera asiática começa a chegar em Veneza.

Splendor
Splendor is the name of an old movie theater managed by Jordan (Mastroianni), who inherited it from his father. The theater is in decay and only generates debts and trouble, but Jordan gets aid in his almost quixotian quest from projectionist Luigi (Troisi) and ushurette Chantale (Vlady). However, Jordan is finally forced to sell the Splendor to businessman Lo Fazio (Piperno), which plans to transform it in some kind of furniture store. When Jordan leaves the theater for the last time (the very first scene), he recalls the glorious days of Splendor and movies in general.

Quem Encontra um Amigo, Encontra um Tesouro
Um homem consegue recuperar um misterioso mapa do tesouro, que foi deixado para trás pelo exército japonês em uma pequena ilha. Ele consegue carona em um barco de um aventureiro, que está dando a volta ao mundo. Sem que o navegador perceba, ele muda a rota da embarcação, rumo à ilha do tesouro. Tudo parece correr bem, até que, chegando ao tão sonhado local, eles descobrem que a ilha não é tão deserta quanto pensavam. Lá estão, além dos nativos, um soldado japonês que ainda guarda o tesouro.
