É a história da desventura de uma empregada desajeitada (Mary Jane, interpretada por Laura Bayley, esposa do diretor) que morre ao tentar acender o fogo com parafina. É considerado por muitos a obra-prima de George A. Smith e certamente seu filme mais famoso. Smith usou várias técnicas para criá-lo, como dupla exposição para a cena do fantasma ou stop-motion para a cena da explosão. Mas a verdadeira novidade deste filme é o uso da edição analítica: Smith alterna continuamente planos totais com planos médios ou close-ups, fazendo-nos notar detalhes que de outra forma teriam passado despercebidos.
