A esposa e o filho de Abe Dale (Nathan Fillion) são brutalmente assassinados diante de seus olhos, sem que ele possa fazer algo para impedir. Sem conseguir lidar com a falha, Abe não vê outra saída senão se suicidar. Ele é levado a um hospital e morre na sala de emergência. Por alguns segundos Abe vê sua esposa e filho o esperando num túnel branco, mas o encontro é interrompido quando o médico consegue ressuscitá-lo. Esta experiência faz com que Abe consiga ver o mundo dos mortos sem qualquer equipamento, o que faz com que perceba que as pessoas que estão prestes a morrer emanam uma luz branca brilhante. Ele passa então a tentar salvá-las a todo custo.
