Conta a história de 11 membros de uma equipe, que foram enviados para o Pólo Sul pela primeira vez em fevereiro de 1957, em um projeto nacional para explorar a Antártica. Eles foram acompanhados por um trenó puxado por 19 cães Sakhalin huskies. Quando eles partiram para o Japão, um ano depois, eles foram forçados a deixar os cães para trás devido ao mau tempo. Em janeiro de 1959, Kuramochi Takeshie e alguns outros se juntaram a uma terceira expedição para averiguar o destino dos cães e para sua surpresa, dois dos cães, Taro e Jiro, foram capazes de sobreviver apesar das condições adversas.
