Pouco depois, o pai é atacado pela tribo dos grandes macacos e morto pelo brutal líder Kerchak, que queria matar o bebê também, mas ele é salvo por Kala, uma carinhosa macaca que havia perdido o seu próprio bebê. Kala cuida da criança e a chama de Tarzan.
