Durante muitos anos, o estado, antes boliviano, atraiu nordestinos e estrangeiros que deixavam suas cidades em busca de uma vida melhor através da extração do látex. A busca incansável por novas áreas de extração prejudicou a natureza, cada vez mais explorada de forma predatória, e trouxe pobreza para a região. A minissérie conta todo esse processo, ao longo de 100 anos, através de três personagens centrais: Galvez (José Wilker), Plácido de Castro (Alexandre Borges) e Chico Mendes (Cássio Gabus Mendes). Para narrar a minissérie, Gloria Perez misturou dados reais e ficção.
