A história é uma adaptação de Leopoldo Serran do folhetim “Asfalto Selvagem: Engraçadinha, Seus Amores e Seus Pecados”, escrito por Nelson Rodrigues e publicado no jornal “Última Hora” entre agosto de 1959 e fevereiro de 1960. Na primeira fase, a personagem Engraçadinha (Alessandra Negrini), com 18 anos, é de família conservadora e noiva de Zózimo (Pedro Paulo Rangel), mas vive uma relação proibida com o primo Sílvio (Ângelo Antônio), que é noivo de sua melhor amiga Letícia (Maria Luisa Mendonça), que, por sua vez, esconde uma atração por Engraçadinha. Na segunda fase da história, vinte anos depois, Engraçadinha (agora interpretada por Claudia Raia) se tornou uma mãe de família religiosa que acaba por se render aos encantos de Luiz Claudio (Alexandre Borges).
