Sinopse: A trama é ambientada na fictícia São Francisco das Formigas, distrito de Bocaiúvas. Abandonada pelo poder municipal, representado pelo prefeito de Bocaiúvas, o poderoso Juca Tigre, São Francisco das Formigas começa a se organizar com a fundação da cooperativa União das Mulheres, liderada pela jovem Leonarda Mendes Galvão, a Léo. Com o tino empresarial de Léo, as mulheres da vila passam a obter crédito financeiro, compram máquinas novas e podem se manter atualizadas com as últimas novidades, fazendo de seu trabalho a principal atividade econômica de Formigas. O crescimento econômico desperta na população o desejo de se emancipar, já que a vila é vítima de constantes descasos da prefeitura. Juca Tigre, no entanto, opõe-se ferozmente à emancipação. O prefeito tem um motivo pessoal para abrir guerra contra Léo e São Francisco das Formigas. No passado, ele foi abandonado no altar por Antônia, mãe de Léo, que exerce forte liderança na comunidade.
